The club photographer knows everybody’s secrets. He knows where to find the players and the manager and where they’re going after the game.
What is your job here at Chelsea Football Club?
I’m the official photographer here at Chelsea Football Club. I’d been working as a professional photographer for many years when the opportunity came up1so I was excited to get the job.
How does it feel to be Chelsea FC’s photographer?
It really is a fantastic job. Sometimes I have to pinch2 myself to see if it’s all real. I’ve worked for other football clubs and magazines but being a Chelsea fan this is a real dream job for me. On match days before the game I usually attend press conferences with photographers and journalists from other newspapers and magazines. I try to find out3 whether there are any important guests or celebrities attending the match.
It’s not a typical 9 to 5 job – in fact every day is different. One day I might be attending a fundraising event4 or a gala dinner5 and another day I might be in a school or hospital. I have to be prepared to work at any time in a huge variety of locations depending on where the action is. Most days I go down to6 the club’s training ground to get pictures of the players while they are training, or after training to do interviews for the Chelsea magazine.
What’s your favourite aspect of the job?
One of the best things about being a photographer is that you are able to get right to the front of the action to take pictures. I have access-all-areas7, which means that I can go wherever I want to take the pictures I need. Days when we sign a new player8 or manager are very exciting as you feel at the centre of the biggest sport’s story in Britain. Another thing I really enjoy is travelling to away games9 with the club and going on the pre-season tour10 to the USA. It’s great to travel with the players and management and feel part of the team.
Is there anything you don’t like?
A lot of my friends are Chelsea supporters so they think I can get them free tickets and autographs from the players but of course I can’t because this would be unprofessional. Sometimes I feel like I’m missing out on11 time with my family as of course I have to work evenings and weekends, but being part of the family here at the club makes it all worthwhile12.
