The inquest had been delayed for 10 years because of the two exhaustive investigations by French and British police. Both concluded that the couple's driver, Henri Paul, was drunk, driving too fast and that the deaths were an accident. Paul also died. But Fayed's father contends that the couple were the targets of a plot orchestrated by Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, , in part because she was carrying Fayed's child.
The inquest revealed that Princess Diana was taking a contraceptive pill during the period before her death, but it probably won’t be able to scientifically prove whether she was pregnant when she died. The pregnancy issue is key to an allegation by Fayed’s father that the couple was murdered by the royal family.
Lord Justice Scott Baker, the coroner leading the inquest, told 11 jurors in LondonOct. 3 that no pregnancy tests were conducted on Diana's body and that there were no visible clues she was pregnant. But he added that at an early stage, there might be no outward signs.
